Set Yourself Up for Success: Core Values

April 3, 2025

Productivity without purpose falls flat. We often equate success with packed calendars and long to-do lists, but without a sense of direction, even the busiest days can feel hollow. Real, sustainable success starts with clarity, and that begins by identifying your core values. When you know what truly matters to you, everything else starts to align.

Identify What Fuels You

Determining your core values doesn’t have to feel like a philosophical deep-dive. Start with simple, powerful questions to uncover your core values:

  1. What experiences have shaped me the most, and what did they teach me about what truly matters?
  2. When have I felt the most fulfilled and aligned in my life or career? What was present in those moments?
  3. What behaviors, in myself or others, do I admire most? Which ones do I find unacceptable?
  4. If I had unlimited time and resources, how would I choose to spend my days? What does that reveal about my priorities?
  5. If someone were to describe my legacy in one sentence, what would I want them to say?

These questions allow you dig deep and identify the values that truly drive and define you.  Reflect on moments when you felt proud, fulfilled, or truly in flow. Whether it was mentoring a colleague, navigating a complex challenge, or building a strong team culture—those experiences are often rooted in your values. Think of them as your professional North Star.

Set Goals with Meaning, Not Just Momentum

Once your core values are clear, your goals become more focused—and more fulfilling. Instead of setting vague ambitions like “be successful,” you’ll define what success means for you: leading with integrity, driving innovation, or cultivating collaboration. When your goals reflect your values, motivation follows naturally. You’re not just checking boxes—you’re making meaningful progress.

Bring Your Vision to Life

Don’t underestimate the power of visualization. Research from TD Bank shows that people who visualize their goals are 1.2 to 1.4 times more likely to achieve them. Vision boards aren’t just for creative types—they’re a powerful tool to make your values-driven goals feel tangible. Make it visual, make it personal, and let it serve as a daily reminder of the future you’re building.

If you’re new to vision boarding, here’s are tips to get you started:

  1. Clarify Your Goals: Before you start, take a moment to get clear on what you want to manifest—whether it’s career growth, personal development, health, or relationships. The more specific, the better.
  2. Gather Meaningful Visuals: Find images, quotes, and symbols that resonate with your goals. Pinterest, magazines, and even your own photos can be great sources. Choose things that inspire you.
  3. Create with Intention: Arrange your visuals in a way that feels empowering. There’s no wrong way to do it—just make sure it reflects the life you’re working towards. Keep it somewhere you’ll see daily to stay motivated.
  4. Physical or Digital: Decide if you want to build a digital vision board using something like Canva or Pinterest or if you want an old fashioned cut & paste onto posterboard. Our personal favorite is the old fashioned because you can hang it up to remind you of it regularly and, if you snap a photo of it, you now have a digital version too!
