This expert roundup in Best of HR explores a diverse range of effective executive coaching techniques—from reflective inquiry and radical self-awareness to stakeholder-centered feedback loops. Among the standout contributions is the Clarity + Compass method, shared by Be Bold Executive Coaching CEO Adriana Cowdin, which emphasizes present-tense goal-setting and prioritization to help leaders gain momentum. The article as a whole highlights how today’s most impactful coaching practices blend strategy with empathy, guiding executives toward intentional growth and lasting transformation.
Apply Clarity + Compass Approach
One of the most effective techniques I use in executive coaching is something I call the Clarity + Compass approach. I start by having my clients write down 10 goals in the present tense–covering every area of their life, not just work. We’re talking about health, family, career, finances, hobbies… the full picture. The key is writing them as if they’re already true.
For example:
“I earn $X with $X in long-term equity at a company that values my leadership style–kindness, empathy, and results.” Or, “I maintain my weight around X pounds, work out five days a week, and actually enjoy what I eat.”
Then comes the part where the magic happens–literally. I ask: “If I had a magic wand and could make one of these goals come true in the next 24 hours, which would it be?” There’s always one that leaps off the page. That’s the one we focus on first. It’s not about what I think they should go after–it’s about what they truly want. My job is to guide, challenge, and coach them in getting there.
We also go beyond just words. I encourage clients to create vision boards–old-school with scissors and magazines or digital if that’s more their style. Seeing their goals as a visual reality helps them stay grounded, motivated, and crystal clear on what they’re working toward.
At the end of the day, clarity creates momentum. And momentum is everything.
